The paper’s front-page editorial notes that on the eve of parliamentary elections, an old phenomenon is coming into play again, with renowned civil society activists openly expressing their party beliefs and officially becoming members of political parties. “Every individual is certainly entitled to political engagement, but the transfer from non-governmental organisations to political parties separates the mission from civil society organisations. At the same time, the transformation of NGO representatives into party officials, especially in cases when they were known for their criticism, weakens their credibility in the eyes of the public. The affiliations of activists with some political parties casts a ray of doubt over the mission of organisations … It is evident that NGOs are becoming springboards to political parties. This is damaging for democracy in Kosovo, because civil society needs to play its role without becoming a stakeholder in political life, but rather serve as a non-political mechanism that address the concerns of marginalised groups and fights for the rights of citizens. Unfortunately, we are seeing a civil society with increased party affiliations.”
