The Government of the Republic of Kosovo today adopted the bill for legal and financial aid for possible defendants of the special court for war crimes in Kosovo. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Hajredin Kuci, said the state is obliged to provide legal aid to possible defendants of the special court that will address war crimes allegations made in Dick Marty’s report. Kuci said in addition to legal aid, the state is also obliged to provide financial aid to the defendants and reimburse all those who will be in detention.

The government also adopted the bill on constitutional amendments for the transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into the Armed Forces of Kosovo.

Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci, called on all political parties to set aside party interests and to vote on the Armed Forces in the assembly. Thaci said this is a historical opportunity for Kosovo to have its own army, “an army of all people leaving in Kosovo, and if this process is delayed Kosovo could be left without an army for several more years”.

Meanwhile, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) is showing no signs that it could accept the request of minority communities to extend their reserved seats in the assembly in exchange for their vote in favor of the Armed Forces.
