Kosovo’s European Integration Minister, Vlora Citaku, writes in an opinion piece that negotiations for the Stabilization/Association Agreement have placed Kosovo on the formal and official process toward EU membership and that these negotiations are now concluding. “In this respect, Kosovo has been treated equally with other countries in the region. The second step after the SAA enters into force, will be to apply for the candidate status and start membership negotiations. Without the SAA these would not have been possible. The SAA is the cornerstone of Kosovo’s integration process. The process of European integration has proved the exceptional force of establishing peace, maintaining stability and overall social development. The world today would have been very different without the European Union … During SAA negotiations, the EU and Kosovo agreed to important reforms that are needed to improve overall social standards in Kosovo. Dates and deadlines were and will be set. Everyone will be held accountable. The same goes for us and the European Union. The state-building process in Kosovo is irreversible and Kosovo is consolidating itself as the youngest state in Europe. Since the declaration of independence, Kosovo has achieved exceptional progress in getting new recognitions and becoming a member of the most important global organizations. In this respect, the SAA is an important step that has confirmed the maturity of our country and has sealed the legitimacy of the progress achieved.”
