Not a single dime for potential defendants! (Koha Ditore)

Political analyst Halil Matoshi argues in his opinion piece that “instead of setting up a special fund for legal and financial assistance for eventual defendants of the special court, it would be more honest and humane for a democratic government to set up a fond that would represent and support civilian victims of the war, a fund dedicated to the rehabilitation of victims and their families”. Matoshi notes that “using the power of government to take away money from Kosovo taxpayers without asking them and allocating them for potential war crimes suspects is a double crime. This is why the people of Kosovo should reject this fund, until it becomes clear if there will be any defendants, who will they be and what charges they will face”. Matoshi further says that if any of the allegations made by Dick Marty are confirmed, “it would be a historical shame to provide assistance for this profile of people by taxpayers’ money … because educated people do not allocate funds in the accounts of alleged criminals! Except in criminalized societies! The legitimate question in this case is why Kosovo did not set up such a fund for KLA commanders who were tried by the ICTY, but wants such a fond now?” In closing, Matoshi notes that if “the government of Kosovo has such material capabilities, it should protect civilian victims of the war (regardless of their ethnicity), rehabilitate survivors of torture (from both sides of the front) and families of killed civilians. This would mark a turning point for the image of Kosovo and it would be a brilliant step in the eyes of international observers as it would show that Kosovo is siding with humanity.”
