Slovenian MEP Jelko Kacin met in Brussels yesterday Ilir Deda, executive director of the center for policy and development. They discussed the assistance of the civil society in Kosovo in the light of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, the protection of minorities, freedom of the press, preparation for elections as well as the start of the process for reaching of Stabilisation and Association Agreement between Kosovo and the EU.

As stated in a statement from Kacin’s office, Slovenian MEP underlined the importance of continuation of the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade and implementation of agreements by both sides.

Kacin added that “other serious issued that the Kosovo society faces should not be overshadows”. Economic development and fight of corruption should get the full attention of the Kosovo leaders.

“I personally think that Kosovo politicians should begin on their own the fight against corruption because only they can see such efforts through. EULEX is a provisional mission which cannot replace the role of justice, media and civil society. In particular, I would stress the urgent need for improvement of coordination between the police and prosecution in Kosovo,” Kacin said.

According to him, success in the dialogue with Belgrade will bring to Kosovo Stabilisation and Association Agreement.

“I consider that before the lengthy process of SAA ratification, Kosovo will gain the candidate status as was the case with Serbia”, concluded Kacin.
