Insurance for vehicles with Serbian license plates in Kosovo, or with Kosovo license plates in Serbia, could cost considerably less from 1 July, announces Kosovo Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sasa Rasic. “The problem of expensive insurance at the administrative crossings between Kosovo and central Serbia still exists, but technical teams from both sides reached an agreement in principle,” said Rasic.

Since the signing of the agreement on freedom of movement, in December 2011, drivers entering from Kosovo to central Serbia with KS or RKS registration plates, pay 105 euros per month for insurance. On the other hand, Kosovo insurers charge 60 euros for registration plates from central Serbia. “From the first of July, the price will probably be around 55 euros, per annum. Rates for freight and other vehicles will certainly be different, depending on the type of the engine, model and age,” said Rasic.

He pointed out that, according to a regulation of the government of Kosovo, vehicle owners in the municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac, Vranje and Medvedja will be exempted from the obligation to pay insurance.

Talking about the procedure of issuing Kosovo driver’s licenses, Rasic said that the search for a solution for licenses issued after November 2011 is ongoing: “There is a problem when it comes to licenses issued by relocated Serbian police departments, but we are working on solving the problem,” said Rasic.

Rasic added that efforts are also underway to solve the issue of re-registering the vehicles in northern Kosovo.
