The paper’s editor-in-chief Arbana Xharra recalls an event in March of 2000 when a 25 year-old student from Pristina was killed three days after quitting his job at UNHCR. For a decade and a half his family has not ceased seeking justice for the killing of its loved one but to date the case is still unsolved.
“This is a case which shows what degraded justice system has been installed through local-international participation. The state of Kosovo owes it to this family and thousands of others to solve post-war killings”, writes Xharra.
The most recent gruesome killing of the PDK candidate, Elvis Pista, is an additional argument that the order-givers of the killings are either increasing or are the same as before. It is a clear signal that failure to punish those responsible for post-war killings has increased the power of criminals who in a very comfortable manner settle scores.
Xharra wonders as to how can Kosovo aspire to be a legal country when the government for more than ten years has used blackmail by seizing the justice system. “A legal state functions when killers are punished and a true justice system is the one that tries not only the killers but their order-givers too”, declares Xharra.
