Brussels-based correspondent Augustin Palokaj opines that as far as the future government of Kosovo is concerned, the only thing that the European Union is interested in is whether or not this government will continue dialogue with Serbia and if it will implement all agreements reached with Belgrade. Palokaj further notes that “according to interpretations by the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) that only the party or coalition that has won the elections can form the government, excludes democracy. Political agreements are a comprising part of democracy and they are reached based on numbers. There is no democratic country in Europe where political forces that win the majority of votes in parliament are not able to form the government. There are many examples in the European Union, where the party with the biggest number of votes is in the opposition. These examples include Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands … It is concerning how the PDK is trying by all means to block the forming of the government even if the necessary votes are secured. Even more concerning is the certainty of some senior PDK officials who argue that according to the Constitutional Court they are the only ones entitled to form the government. Kosovo politicians are behaving as if there is no life outside the government. This creates tensions not only in the political life in Kosovo. Political interpretations of the Constitution politicize the Constitutional Court and raise doubts about it. We have yet to find a single EU official or diplomat that will deny the right of the LDK, AAK and Nisma to form the government if they have the required number of votes. They admit they were surprised by this agreement, but part of their surprise is based on information they were getting sources in Pristina according to which Thaci and Haradinaj had reached an agreement.”
