Political analyst Halil Matoshi writes today about the recent assassination of Elvis Pista, candidate of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) for Parliament. “The killing of a citizen in his birthplace while he was in the company of relatives and friends might not have anything to do with politics, but in the context created in Kosovo, the lack of security and the seizure of security structures by segments of clandestine parapolitics, gives political connotations to the assassination of the PDK candidate. Until the state does not resolve the case, be it even with assistance from foreign experts (why not the FBI), then a possible interpretation is legitimate: behind the assassination is a blind tool of segments that have seized the state, in other words the state itself,” Matoshi writes. “Apprehending the assassinator of Pista would be the only evidence that the political and institutional elite are serious about state-building. The failure to apprehend the assassinator or to resolve this case would once again prove the growing aggressiveness of the political elite, the ignorance, lack of professionalism and the evil spirit of those who hold political power in the country. This is a good opportunity for Thaci’s government and segments of the state under his control: catch the assassinator and prove to us that you are doing your job … If the PDK and Hashim Thaci claim that they have built rule of law in their two mandates in government, the assassinator of Elvis Pista should have already been caught, so that every citizen can feel free and safe. If not, the responsibility falls on the state”.
