Zeljko Bojic, regional head of the operative Kosovo police, has said that the night was peaceful after the removal of a barricade on the bridge between northern and southern Kosovska Mitrovica.

Bojic said that the police presence in the city will be stepped up.

A cultural heritage fair will be held on Thursday evening so the police presence in the downtown and near the main bridge on the Ibar River will be stepped up, Bojic told Tanjug.

After removing the barricade on the main bridge on the Ibar River, which connects the Albanian and Serb parts of the city, a peace park was built. Concrete flower pots were placed at the main bridge on the Ibar River at the spot where the block once stood, and the bridge was thus opened for pedestrians, but it is still closed for transport.

Early on Wednesday, the citizens removed the barricade on the northern side of the main bridge over the Ibar River in Kosovska Mitrovica with the help of trucks and heavy machinery, and no incidents were reported during the action.

Northern Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Goran Rakic said on Wednesday that he has adopted the decision to build a peace park next to the bridge on the Ibar River, which divides the city into the northern and southern Mitrovica, because he is aware that the removal of the roadblock from the bridge is a disturbing piece of news for a majority of Serbs in the city.

The decision was adopted after lengthy consultations and in constant coordination with the Serbian government, he said.
