US Embassy in Serbia today expressed regret over the violence, fanaticism and hooliganism at last night’s football match Serbia-Albania in Belgrade. “It is regrettable that another sport event has turned into a place for the expression of nationalism and violence. Sport events are no place for this kind of fanaticism and hooliganism,” was said from the Embassy.

When it comes to the report on the detention of Olsi Rama, brother of Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama, who, according to the media, had an American passport, Beta Agency was told that “the United States Embassy had no role whatsoever in connection with last night’s events at a football game.”

Michael Davenport, Head of EU Delegation to Serbia wrote on his Twitter account that there is no point to comment on fabrications in today’s media, commenting on allegations that European diplomats sought from the Serbian authorities to allow entry of the extremist Albanian fans in the country.

‘There is no point to comment on fabrications in some media. Government explained us last night actions related to the Albanian fans. I did not insist on anything. I condemn the violence and political provocations, which happened last night, at the stadium. It is now up to the governments here in Belgrade and Tirana to demonstrate courage and responsibility, so that such actions will not stray them from the European path.’
