The paper’s Brussels-based correspondent, Augustin Palokaj, writes in his weekly column that even if European Commission were to positively assess implementation of visa liberalization criteria by Kosovo institutions, there are certain developments which, according to EU officials, could have a negative impact on the process. These include the trend of the Kosovo youths joining terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq, lack of concrete results in the fight against organised crime and corruption, involvement of people from Kosovo in incidents in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), irregular migration of Kosovo people to EU countries and above all, the difficult social situation in Kosovo. According to Palokaj, the most likely outcome of the European Commission’s assessment on Kosovo’s implementation of visa liberalization criteria will be like those of previous years which on the one hand keeps alive the hope of the people of Kosovo that visa liberalization is not far while on the other, fails to give a specific timeframe as to when this could actually happen.
