Moscow could work on the issue of the court at the UN, however it is possible that such news is published in order to scare Pristina a bit, writes Russian information site ‘Sputnik’.

Russia has the right, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, to propose creation of the court for the Kosovo Liberation Army war crimes, however its effort would be blocked by the US, which treats Kosovo as its zone of interest, writes Serbian desk of the Russian information portal ‘Sputnik’.

The portal referred to information that appeared in Pristina-based media that Russia would  propose the creation of a court for war crimes committed by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), unless Kosovo government and parliament don’t manage to agree on the establishment of the court.

Georg Engelhardt from the Russian Institute for Slavic Studies argues that it is about an effort of the US diplomacy to exert pressure on Pristina.

“Americans are exerting pressure on their people in Pristina, whereas Russia is used as a bugaboo. In any case, UNSC structure is important for Russia, since within this institution it can influence the decision making processes. The other question is whether such initiative would have the support of Belgrade, considering that its political will is now paralyzed. The problem in the UN is in politization of this organization,” said Engelhardt and added that states who promoted Kosovo’s independence would go blind on many things when it comes to court processes referring to crimes committed by the KLA. He further said that results of such court would not benefit Serbia’s sovereignty. “Maximum that would be achieved after the process and verdicts would be rotation of Kosovo elite. Instead of people with criminal background, the state would be run, for example, by Ilir Deda, but that would not essentially change Kosovo’s status,” claims Engelhardt.

Political analyst Vladimir Trapara said to Sputnjik that such Russian initiative stands no chances in the UN. “Americans would for sure veto such proposal. They consider Kosovo as their zone of interest and would not allow Russia to interfere,” said Trapara.
