Kosovo’s membership in UNESCO would be a precedent that would harm the future functioning of the organization, which Serbia sees as very important for the protection of its cultural heritage, said the head of Serbia’s negotiating team with the European Union (EU), Tanja Miscevic.

In regards to the Kosovo’s bid to join UNESCO, she said that the international organizations are, unfortunately, influenced by politics, and pointed out that Serbia needs to increase its diplomatic activity, in order to prevent a negative outcome.

Miscevic pointed out that there are several possible scenarios, but that it will not be simple and easy to make a decision on Kosovo’s eventual membership in UNESCO and that it would probably require long discussions.

Miscevic reminded that Serbia as a member of UNESCO already protested, and added that for the countries that are not members of the UN is difficult to become members of UNESCO. She stressed that cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohija is not small and that it doesn’t belong only to Serbia. That is civilization heritage and that’s why it has to be safeguarded by the UNESCO.

Miscevic added that much depends on the position and understanding of the states that should make the decision.
