Opposition criticizes Government of empowering UNMIK’s role

(Klan Kosova & KTV)

Government of Kosovo should never empower the role of UNMIK in Kosovo. The Government has done this by applying for membership in UNESCO through the Office of this Mission in Prishtinë/Pristina.

According to the opposition parties, the international mission (UNMIK) has lost this role since the independence of Kosovo.

Zgjim Hyseni of Vetëvendosje considers application to UNESCO as a very good action, but he says that this should be done directly. According to him, UNMIK’s empowerment is a continuation of the policy of former Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi.

Besnik Tahiri of AAK also considers this action of Ministry of Foreign Affairs absurd.

The Kosovo Government officials, on the other hand, again did not make any pronouncement about this matter.

Klan Kosova reported that Kosovo application for membership in UNESCO still has not reached the offices of this UN organization. This was confirmed to Klan Kosova by the Head of UNESCO Information Office, George Papagiannis.

Kosovo deputy minister of foreign affairs, Petrit Selimi, told Klan Kosova over the phone that at least two weeks are needed for Kosovo application to reach UNESCO.

He said that Kosovo application was submitted through UNMIK for the fact that Kosovo still is not a UN member state, and because the request should go through this Mission.

UNMIK did not want to comment this case.
