The new United States Ambassador to Kosovo, Gregory Delawie, said on Wednesday that Kosovo’s leaders should establish the special court as soon as possible. “The next couple of days will be crucial for the country. I honestly hope that Kosovo will pass the legislation on the establishment of the special court, and bring justice for those who suffered at the hands of those involved in crime. The failure of local institutions to establish this court means that many things will go backwards,” Delawie said during a ceremony at the State Department in Washington. Delawie, who will assume his post in Pristina in August, also talked about the migration of Kosovars and the rule of law. “This generation of Kosovo’s leaders has the chance to set the country on the right track. There is no time to lose. The migration crisis last winter was a clear sign that people, especially the youth, have lost their faith in a better future in Kosovo. This is why as soon as I assume my post in Pristina, I shall focus on three important issues: strengthening the rule of law, improving security and promoting economic development. To me, strengthening the rule of law implies internationally-applied standards and accountable leaders that are willing to put the country’s interests as their top priorities,” Delawie said.
