Kosovo Deputy Minister of Justice and National Coordinator against domestic violence, Lirak Celaj, today attended and spoke at the official opening of the campaign “16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence” which also marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Celaj stressed that is important to cultivate a family without violence and promote the values of peace and family harmony. Meanwhile, the head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Jean-Claude Schlumberger, said that the relevant institutions should do more to improve their response to domestic violence cases. He said that Kosovo institutions have failed in some cases. Alessandra Roccasalvo, UNDP in Kosovo Deputy Resident Representative said that women should speak out publicly and openly about their cases.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence is an annual campaign that occurs between 25 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and 10 December (Human Rights Day). The campaign aims to encourage action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The 2015 campaign in Kosovo focuses on the concept of ‘Everyday Heroes and Heroines for Gender Equality’. An enthusiastic group of young people participated in trainings on gender equality and photography. Using their newly developed skills, they photographed their heroes or heroines for gender equality – people who inspire them to realise gender equality in their everyday lives.
