The US Embassy informed that neither the US Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby nor any other US official have ever connected recognition of Kosovo or its membership in the UN with Serbia’s membership in the EU.

“All decisions in regard to the EU membership are exclusive responsibility of the European Union,” reads the statement forwarded yesterday to Tanjug, which came as a reaction to an interview of the former US ambassador to Serbia William Montgomery to Tanjug agency, who said that the outgoing US ambassador had made counterproductive and unnecessary ‘Christmas gift’ by announcing in his interview with Vecernje Novosti on 24 December what would US request for supporting the opening of chapters in Serbia’s negotiation with the EU.

In his interview to Vecernje Novosti Kirby said that the US is not asking Serbia to recognize Kosovo and that US insists on normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina. “What would that normalization mean in the end, it is up to European Union to define it, however, according to us, that implies and Kosovo’s membership in the UN,” said Kirby in his interview to the paper.
