European Parliament Vice President and Rapporteur for Kosovo, Ulrike Lunacek, told the European Western Balkans web portal that the future of Kosovo and Serbia is closely intertwined and that Kosovo’s European fate strongly correlates with Serbia’s advancement and vice-versa. She said the green light for visa liberalization for the citizens of Kosovo creates a very good momentum and has to be utilized. Kosovo should not rest on its laurels but has to intensify its efforts with regard to the country’s relations with Serbia, urging that “all agreements between Belgrade and Pristina must be implemented”. Lunacek also praised the commitment demonstrated by the government of Kosovo: “Visa liberalisation is not a right, it is merit based. The government in Pristina has done a lot in fulfilling the requested benchmarks. It is now up to the Ministers of Interior of the EU Member States and the European Parliament to stick to promises and agree.” Lunacek said she was optimistic that the border demarcation with Montenegro would soon be ratified by the Kosovo Assembly and thereby enabling the people of Kosovo to benefit from the freedom of travel. By lifting the visa requirements for Kosovo, the whole region of the Western Balkans will be fully integrated into EU’s visa-free regime, said further Lunacek stressing the importance of this “long overdue step”.
