“Germany will not ratify the agreement on accepting Serbia to the EU until Kosovo becomes a full-fledged member of the UN.”

This is what Belgrade-based daily Danas reported on Monday, citing an unnamed member of the German parliament from the ruling CDU/CSU.

“Top Serbian state officials were told two years ago that Kosovo’s membership in the UN will be one of the conditions for Serbia to be accepted to the EU,” the MP, who the paper said did not want to be named, said.

According to him, “this position of Germany was told to Serbia when the Brussels agreement between Serbia and Kosovo was discussed.”

“We said then that we would not ratify Serbia’s membership in the EU unless Serbia accepts that Kosovo becomes a full-fledged member of the UN,” the paper’s source said.

According to the article, he then “added that the issue is still open in his party, because there are different opinions about it.”

The German MP also stated that “it is time to launch the process of recognizing the membership of Kosovo in the UN,” as well as to “convince the people in the ruling Serb Progressive Party to accept this demand,” and, “prepare the public in Serbia for this decision.”
