“Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci’s nickname during the war was the ‘Snake’ because he left no traces. But for several years now, his traces are being followed by crimes prosecutors,” the German newspaper Der Spiegel writes. “In the 1990s, Thaci was one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, and since 2016 he has been President of Kosovo. And now as he has the privilege to give his former fellow combatant Ramush Haradinaj the task of forming a new government, Thaci is faced with possible war crimes allegations by a special tribunal in The Hague”. “Kosovo’s President is determined to prove that present-day Thaci has nothing in common with a man for whom German intelligence said controls a criminal network that operates all over Kosovo … In the eyes of many he is a hero, but for others he is a possible war criminal – what does he think about the differing opinions? Thaci pauses when he is asked this question in his office. Then he says: first of all, I was supreme political commander, not a military commander. Secondly, no special tribunal in the world can rewrite history. We have nothing to hide”.
