Knaus: Serbia will not join EU if it does not recognize Kosovo (RTK, RFE)

Austrian analyst, Gerald Knaus, who is also founder and president of the European Stability Initiative, said that recognition of Kosovo is Serbia’s ticket for EU membership.

“If Serbia does not recognize Kosovo, it will definitely never join the EU. Everyone knows this. And the longer this visible truth is not accepted by politicians in Belgrade, the more time will be wasted,” Knaus said.

Commenting the statement of the Prime Minister of Albania that Kosovo and Albania should someday have a joint president, Knaus said this is more an effort to deceive the European Union.

“I think that it is a bluff, I do not consider that there is a realistic support for change of borders neither in Tirana nor Pristina. Good relations among neighbors are not a threat to anyone, but more than that would have been totally unwanted and completely unrealistic. However, it is clear that if Albania and Kosovo are not treated seriously by the rest of Europe, if they are left outside, they will remind Europe that they can come up with agenda and issues that make them interesting again,” Knaus said.

On Monday, the European Union has warned Albania against ‘interference’ in neighboring countries, as Rama said that his country and Kosovo can have someday a joint president as “symbol of national unity.”
