Citing unnamed diplomatic sources, Belgrade-based Danas newspaper reports that Serbia and Kosovo could reach an agreement for normalization of relations in the next six or twelve months but that for the time being there is no sign of compromise. Sources said that a quick solution for the Kosovo issue would be done in accordance with the will of the West, primarily the United States of America, the European Union and Germany, but that Russia would strongly oppose a scenario that would involve Kosovo’s membership of the United Nations, be it even as an observer. “Russia is trying for a unique model for Kosovo, Abkhazia, Pridnestria, South Ossetia, with UN Mediation. For Moscow, a partial solution of the Kosovo issue would not be acceptable and Russians in that case would turn their backs on Belgrade … However, one cannot rule out the possibility of Americans and Russians making a political deal and for this package to include the settlement of the Kosovo issue,” the sources said. “Vucic is certainly under pressure from the West to reach a deal with Kosovo and he told the same thing to The Guardian. Kosovo’s division is unacceptable to the EU and the U.S. Pristina meanwhile is insisting on UN membership. So there is the impression that no one is ready for the compromise that Vucic talks about”.
