Leader of Civic Initiative, Freedom, Democracy, Justice Oliver Ivanovic was murdered on this day, one year ago in front of his party premises in Mitrovica North, Serbian media report.
Organizers of the murder and his assassins have not been found yet. The results of the investigation were not published, although official Belgrade promised to deliver the first information two weeks after the murder.
At Saint Sava Temple in Belgrade, Ivanovic’s wife Milena and their son Bogdan lighted the candles. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, Office for Kosovo and Metohija Director Marko Djuric and Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin were also present. High number of citizens gathered in front of the temple to light the candles.
Ivanovic’s brother, Miroslav recently said he sees no commitment to finding the killers and remains firmly convinced that the murder of his brother was political. He refuted claims that Serbian opposition, which plans a walk later today to commemorate the anniversary of Oliver Ivanovic’s murder, is politicizing his death. He also refuted claims that the opposition was not supportive of Oliver, once he got arrested by EULEX, recalling that some opposition leaders and non-governmental organizations were protesting then but in vain.
He also did not want to comment on the claims of Oliver Ivanovic’s wife Milena, who recently said that no one threatened Oliver and that he did not feel endangered, saying responses to these claims could be found in interviews Oliver gave to the media, and that can easily be found on the internet.
Civic Initiative Freedom, Democracy, Justice (GI SDP) will light candles and lay the flowers, to commemorate the death of Oliver Ivanovic, in front of its premises in Mitrovica North, at 10:00 hrs today.
Organizers of the protests “One in Five Million” would mark the anniversary of Ivanovic’s murder this evening, starting at 18:00, in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. Milena Popovic, Ivanovic’s wife said she will not attend that protest since for her it represents “politicization of tragedy” while Ivanovic’s nephew Aleksandar wrote on Twitter his family would attend the protest.
