Kosovo warns with “reciprocity measures” against Serbia (Radio Free Europe)

“The Kosovo government will act in reciprocity in the future if the Serbian government continues to arrest high-ranking officers or officials of the state of Kosovo,” Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj said in an interview with Radio Free Europe. Hoxhaj said the arrest of Kosovo Police regional director Nehat Thaci by Serbian authorities was "an unacceptable act" and added that increased efforts were underway to release him. Thaci was arrested on Thursday at the Koncul border crossing point based on a Serbian arrest warrant for terror charges. On Friday, a court in Nis set a 30-day detention measure against Thaci. Hoxhaj commented: “This should be viewed from a broader perspective. Serbia has increase the scope of provocations vis-à-vis Kosovo and the region. This includes developments in Republika Srpska and the referendum there and also the frequent and multidimensional interventions in Kosovo and other countries of the region. This has become unacceptable for us”. Authorities in Pristina have said that Thaci’s arrest should be addressed at the ongoing dialogue in Brussels, even though the European Union has not made any comment yet on Thaci’s arrest. Hoxhaj said the Kosovo government has called on the international community to put pressure on Belgrade. “We have asked our international partners to put pressure on Serbia because at a time when the two countries are in the process of normalizing relations, it is unacceptable and unreasonable to arrest someone and put him in detention based on ungrounded accusations,” Hoxhaj added. Artan Muhaxhiri, political analyst from Pristina, told Radio Free Europe that the arrest of Kosovo officials by Serbian authorities is provocation and blackmail. He further argued that as a result of such provocations, the Kosovo government should have immediately suspended talks with Belgrade until Thaci is released. “The Kosovo government’s indifferent reaction to a practice that insults the state, people and institutions of Kosovo is shameful, because it shows that Serbia can make such provocations whenever it pleases and Kosovo cannot react properly … Part of the blame falls on Brussels too, because they close their eyes before such actions by Serbia. Such acts undermine every hope and dialogue for improving relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which is Brussels’ key objective,” he added.
