"South Tyrol" for Serbs, but in an independent state of Kosovo (Vecernje Novosti)
Vecernje Novosti today write that the authorities in Pristina largely present to the western embassies their solution for the status of an independent Kosovo in which the position of the Serbs would be arranged by the model of South Tyrol in Italy.
This action coincided with the agreement of Hashim Thaci and Ramush Haradinaj that there is no negotiation of demarcation and threatens to place Belgrade before a fait accompli, Novosti learns.
According to this Belgrade based daily if Pristina receives the support of the key countries of the West for this plan, Belgrade, i.e. President Aleksandar Vucic, practically remains isolated in months of efforts to finally resolve the historical node with a sustainable agreement and mutual compromises.
Novosti writes that this model was mentions as an option, but for the whole territory of Kosovo in relation to central Serbia.
According to this daily, Pristina with this option “twists the status of Serbs" while not implementing the obligation of the Brussels agreement, formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities (ZSO).
The South Tyrol model would serve them as an alternative to the ZSO, but with the rounding of sovereignty across the whole territory, which would create the conditions for competing for a chair in the United Nations.
Novosti assesses that such a manoeuvre would bring a danger to the stability of Serbia, because than the agreement would be practically impossible and pose a risk for Belgrade, i.e. Vucic, to be accused for the collapse of the negotiations with incalculable consequences.
The daily continue quoting Vucic’s words from Wednesday in Majdanpek, where he said that Serbia will not get anything in negotiations with Pristina. Vucic also said this in a telephone conversation with US Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell, the daily reports, but also that Vucic added that Serbia continues with efforts to achieve lasting stability in the Western Balkans.
