NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs James Appathurai told Belgrade based TV Prva that at this moment NATO provides advisory support to the Kosovo Security Force, not to any potential new army.

"Although the Kosovo authorities are heading towards this, then that is something that we will have to follow very carefully," Appathurai says.

He added that "whatever happens in Kosovo regarding the Kosovo Security Force, it is very important that this be done with full consultation with communities - all communities in Kosovo."

Asked what would happen to KFOR, if Kosovo Army was formed and takes over the security sector, Appathurai recalled that KFOR has a mandate of the United Nations 1244 and will continue to implement it.

"KFOR has responsibilities in Kosovo for a safe and secure environment. It is the third in a responding line (the third responder), as you know well, with the Kosovo Security Force and the EU. KFOR is the third responding line with very clear responsibilities given by the Council (UN). While these responsibilities do not change, they will be implemented," Appathurai points out.
