Cvetkovic: There is no information that terrorist attacks in Serbia are being prepared (Vecernje Novosti, Novi Magazin)
Director of the Military Security Agency (VBA) Petar Cvetkovic said that there is no information that terrorist attacks in Serbia are being prepared or organized, but that does not preclude the possibility of individual actions. The threat derives from returnees from the battlefields of Syria and Iraq, bearing in mind that the majority of them have participated in combat operations and went through a process of intense religious indoctrination. He added that the Serbian security services have data on citizens from Serbia and the region involved in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq and that the numbers are variable. Cvetkovic said that the security situation in Serbia as a whole "is stable with the existence of indicators of possible destabilization in Kosovo and Metohija."
“The political and security situation in Kosovo and Metohija has been unstable for a long time, mainly because of the disagreement between government and opposition regarding the implementation of the Brussels agreement, which is related to the formation of the Association/ Community of Serb Municipalities. The situation is additionally burdened with actions by radical Islamists in the province, who have returned from war areas increasingly manifesting threats. Our Service will undertake precautionary and other measures aimed at preventing a possible spill over of the crisis across the administrative line and endangering the units of the army and the MUP (Ministry of Internal Affairs) in the Ground Safety Zone. For now, there are no indicators that could point to such an escalation,” said Cvetković.
