The most significant portal in Germany, Spiegel Online, reported that eventual candidates for the seat of the United Nations Secretary General, are mainly from Eastern Europe and former Yugoslavia. According to Spiegel Online, this major presence of politicians from Europe comes as result of the unwritten tradition to nominate a candidate from Europe, respectively from South-Eastern Europe after a candidate from Asia serves his or her mandate.

Several news sites carry an interview originally published in Radio Free Europe of a Kosovo Albanian male who confessed that he was raped by Serbian troops in Pristina during the Kosovo conflict. The victim said he was stopped and sexually abused by Serbian police officers in downtown Pristina. The victim said that after the conflict he told the authorities about his experience.

United States Congressman Elliot Engel in his address to the Kosovo Assembly today called for the establishment of the special court that will address war crimes allegations. Engel said the court would be established, either by the Kosovo Assembly or the United Nations, and that it would not be good for Kosovo if the UN establishes the court. Engel said Kosovo was doing many things that other countries cannot do, but also that a lot remains to be done in the fight against corruption and for economic development.

The members of the Kosovo Assembly have reportedly seen a draft on the special court prepared by Russia which the member states of the United Nations Security Council will vote on if Kosovo’s authorities fail to establish the special court. According to the news site, the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has discussed the draft and the financial cost of the UN establishing the special court. A source that has reportedly seen the draft told Klan Kosova that the term genocide is mentioned in several chapters of the document.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, believes that Kosovo’s membership of the United Nations would be a sustainable solution between Belgrade and Pristina. Serbian media have reported that during her visit to Belgrade, Merkel will ask Serbian government officials not to impede Kosovo’s UN membership. Berlin’s position is that if Serbia doesn’t obstruct Kosovo’s path toward UN membership, this would not mean that Serbia is recognizing Kosovo’s independence.

The Government of Serbia has not yet decided if  country will participate in the race for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, was said to Novosti. “The situation is still analyzing and discussing with our key international partners. It is still not known whether Serbia will participate, and whether support will be given to former foreign minister Vuk Jeremic, who is considered as the most serious candidate”, was said.
