Rama-Thaci, a show in Prizren (Tribuna)

Columnist Armand Shkullaku writes in his opinion piece about the meeting between the governments of Albania and Kosovo in Prizren this Saturday. Shkullaku notes that the meeting has a powerful symbolic as it will be held in the house of the Prizren League and that being the first of its kind deserves a historic epithet. “But in addition to pictures, history also requires acts and these will be the true test of the value of this meeting in the future … Albanians need, more than a patriotic show, facilitations by both governments for a process that Albanians themselves have initiated four or five years ago. Albanians themselves are approaching one another and they don’t need their governments to place obstacles to a phenomenon that is already underway. Citizens of both countries need to hear from their respective governments about concrete initiatives toward improving their situation and timelines for their implementation”. Shkullaku predicts that on Saturday in Prizren the engagements of both governments will most probably remain at a rhetorical level, “as Rama and Thaci will try to gain political capital from a media show that will be broadcast live in Tirana and Pristina”. According to Shkullaku, Thaci needs patriotic credit for the upcoming parliamentary elections. “Albanians from Presevo Valley, although they are not even mentioned in agreements between Pristina and Belgrade, have been masterfully placed at the center of Saturday’s meeting in order to show the patriotic concern of both governments for their fate. While Thaci needs a patriotic Albanian card up his sleeve for local politics, Rama is after another capital. After the failure of the agreement with the United States of America for destroying Syrian chemical weapons, Rama is desperately trying to prove that he is not just a local leader. Through Kosovo, Presevo Valley or invitations to include in symbolic meetings Albanians from Macedonia and Montenegro, Rama is trying to win over a regional role and become a factor with Albania’s strategic partners. A true leader however is tested in difficult times when decisions need to be made and Rama has failed this test.”
