Greek ambassador to Pristina, Dimitris Moschopoulos, told Radio Kosova that Greece supports Kosovo’s European perspective. According to him, Kosovo’s membership in European Union implies its recognition by the member states, including Greece.

Although he didn’t give an exact date as to when this would happen, Moskopulos said decision for recognition will take into consideration Greek interest and regional, political balance.

Head of Greek Office in Kosovo, Dimitris Moschopulos said Greece is a strong supporter of processes in which Kosovo is going through. The Greek ambassador said his country, as presiding currently over the European Union, will assist Kosovo in fulfilling its aspirations, which it also did before taking on the EU presidency.

“We have always maintained that we support Kosovo’s European perspective which also means its membership in the EU. Our policy remains the same, we support Europe and are ready to assist in implementation of EU-set criteria”.

With regards to Kosovo’s recognition from Greece, although he gives no date when this could happen, ambassador Moschopulos doesn’t deny the prospect of Greece one day deciding to recognize it. “We want Kosovo to become EU member and this means no country can become so without being recognized by all countries”.

“Saying we support European perspective means that in a way we have to also recognize Kosovo. When this will happen, we don’t know. Greek Government has said several times that the decision has to take into consideration the overall situation, regional balances and Greek interests. But I cannot say recognition will be this year or the next”.

At the same time, ambassador Moschopulos said Greece will also support two other processes Kosovo is undergoing, SAA and visa liberalization. These two processes require meeting of certain criteria, therefore Greece is ready as EU and as a country to help Kosovo in this direction.
