After an increasing number of armed incidents in Kosovo, members of the Commission for Internal Affairs, Security and Supervision of the Kosovo Security Force called on law enforcement authorities to provide more security for the citizens across the country.

Kosovo Assembly Commission members said they are working on amending the law on weapons in order to increase control on possession of arms.

Head of the Commission, Ahmet Isufi, said Kosovo Police should undertake more proactive actions in providing greater security and confiscating illegal weapons.

Late last year, under an initiative from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, UNDP, Kosovo Police and other organisations, 1,315 confiscated weapons were destroyed.

In 2013, 39 people died from firearms and this year, by 14 February, the figure stands at 5. However, according to the police, there have been other cases beyond the reporting period.

One of Kosovo Police spokespersons, Brahim Sadriu, said that 1,366 weapons were confiscated last year along with 16,298 ammunition.

Fear, distrust with security institutions and contemporary tradition are some of the reasons why citizens of Kosovo keep illegal weapons, Kosovo authorities say.

Kosovo Assembly in 2010 had passed the law on small arms and supplementing instructions. The law is in the process of being amended at present.
