Budget theft as government policy (Zeri)

Vetevendosje leader, Albin Kurti, in an opinion piece for the paper writes that not only is there no decrease of unemployment in Kosovo but even those people who do have a job, barely make ends meet.

Having a small number of employed people and even less producers, citizens of Kosovo have little self-esteem. They normally buy from import and inherit land from their families, claims Kurti. He says the social peace in Kosovo is being maintained by remittances which make 2/3 of the budget while the construction of highways has cost Kosovo a full annual budget of 1.4 billion euros.

Kurti suggests Kosovo should move from the logic of declaration of independence and donors’ conferences and focus on the strategy of implementing its sovereignty and organising investors’ conferences. “For this purpose, we have to go from the simple role of government in finance to the sophisticated role of the state in economy,” he writes.

The most recent decision of the Kosovo Government to increase the salaries of public servants, according to Kurti, is being done to the detriment of the public services. He claims that this rise is not based on the increase of productivity but the Government is eating up the vast part of the budget and leaves the “crumbs” to the rest.

“Thaci is no Robin Hood to steal from the rich and give to the poor and keep nothing for himself. Thaci is quite the opposite of Robin Hood: he takes from the poor to give to the rich and especially setting aside his own share,” writes Kurti adding that it is precisely the poor and the middle class that contribute the most to the budget.
