Most members of parliament are unaware about a possible agreement between political leaders to set a date for the abolishment of parliament. MPs however do not rule out the possibility of a draft agreement for the date of general elections. Opposition representatives meanwhile believe the parliament needs to be abolished and elections should be held as soon as possible.

PDK parliamentary group chief, Adem Grabovci, neither denied nor confirmed reports that PDK leader Hashim Thaci is planning to reach a deal with leaders of political parties to set the date for the abolishment of parliament and for early parliamentary elections. “I don’t know about an agreement to abolish parliament, but there is an agreement between political leaders for the agenda until the date of elections. What is important is that all political parties are making their contributions to have the law on elections ready,” Grabovci added.

LDK MP Eqrem Kryeziu said there is an agreement among political leaders to hold parliamentary elections in June. “It is a public secret that Mr. Isa Mustafa [LDK leader] and PDK leaders have agreed to hold elections in June. Given the circumstances, we will have to choose how to proceed with elections: whether every MP will have to annul his/her mandate, or in some other way, we will have to wait and see,” he said.

Myzejene Selmani, a member of the ruling coalition, said she does not believe in an agreement to abolish parliament, “because this mandate of parliament has a lot to do before elections”. “We have around 23 laws for the Stabilization/Association Agreement; we have the issue of EULEX’s mandate, the issue of the tribunal. I believe both the government and the opposition want to conclude the issue of EULEX’s mandate because it is provided in the Constitution. The same goes for the tribunal, we should not allow Serbia and Russia to play their games at the session of the United Nations,” she added.

Vetevendosje MP Rexhep Selimi said he is unaware about an agreement to abolish parliament, but did say that Kosovo needs to hold parliamentary elections as soon as possible. “The sooner we have elections, the more chances Kosovo will have to emerge from the situation created by the current government,” Selimi said.

PDK leader Thaci is expected to host a roundtable with political parties and reach a final decision on the timeline of parliamentary elections.
