Launching “Kosovo Women’s Week”, President Atifete Jahjaga said Kosovo society can progress only when it sees gender equality as part of its history. “It is our responsibility to change the course of history and together build a society, a more comprehensive world; a world where gender equality will no longer be a topic of discussion,” said Jahjaga.

President Jahjaga also spoke about the position of victims of sexual violence during the conflict in Kosovo. She said these victims deserve to lead a dignified life despite experiencing such a great misfortune. “We cannot change their past but we can make sure their future is not determined by that bitter past,” said Jahjaga.

US Ambassador to Kosovo, Tracey Ann Jacobson, began her address by quoting US President Barack Obama, who said that the best way to see how a country is developing is to look at how it treats its women. “Nothing can be achieved without an organised, active, loud group of women,” she said.

Teuta Sahatqija, leader of the Kosovo Women MPs and the host of the event, said that on the third year of its establishment, “Kosovo Women’s Week” has attracted a huge interest in terms of  participation. She said the activities during this week will include information technology workshops, trainings for  women leaders and single mothers, seminars on European integration, and Law on Inheritance.
