It is a historical fact that NATO did not have the approval of the United Nations Security Council to bomb Serbia, however the action was carried out in line with international law, learned Tanjug. Asked to reflect on Friday’s statement made by NATO where they openly recognise that the bombardments were carried out without the approval of the UN Security Council for the first time, a NATO official who preferred to remain anonymous told Tanjug that “NATO didn’t change its stance, instead it published a long known fact”.
According to the source, lacking the UN Security Council’s permission to bomb Serbia is the “‘historical fact”, however, it was a legitimate operation. “The air campaign aiming at protecting civilians was completely in line with international law, regardless that there was no UN resolution, which would explicitly approve it,” said the source. He stressed that, unlike the Ukrainian crisis, Kosovo was discussed by the Security Council, before and after the NATO intervention.
In its reply to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, NATO openly recognised that action was carried out without the UN Security Council’s approval. In NATO’s previous statements, this fact was always concealed.
