The writer and former president of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia Dobrica Cosic said that Kosovo issue is ‘settled’ and that it was ‘politically lost’ in 1999, and that not a single atom of energy should be wasted on that issue any more.

“We lost Kosovo in the war with Albanians. Is it final? We can’t judge it today, since no one knows how European and Balkan history could be shaped in centuries to come, or a century,” said Cosic in the interview to Belgrade-based weekly Nedeljnik.

On question whether he sees Serbia in the European Union, Cosic replied negative.

“I don’t. I expect more understanding for Serbia from the EU, which is constantly sending ultimatums. The EU diplomacy toward Serbia is the diplomacy of blackmails, what is humiliating for our state and shows a ‘short memory’ of the EU leaders,” said Cosic.

He added that Serbia is ‘central force in Balkans’ and that ‘by decision on creating Big Albania in the heart of Europe, Europe is working against itself’.

On question on nowadays allies of Serbia, Cosic said that only ‘realistic ally’ could be the Russian President Vladimir Putin, and only, as he put it, as long as Putin is a putinist’. I don’t see any other figure. Mrs. (Angela) Merkel is aggressive and she is not performing only with political, but, as it seems to me, with a revanchist passion,” said Cosic.
