A working group in Pristina that organized a petition seeking international justice for women raped during the war in Kosovo is waiting for a reply from the United Nations headquarters in New York, before they can submit the petition. Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister Edita Tahiri, who leads the working group, said the UN needs to prepare a report on what happened with the raping of women during the Kosovo conflict and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. “We are now waiting for confirmation from the United Nations, namely from Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the UN High Representative for the issue of raped women. We have asked them to arrange a meeting where we would submit the petition. When we receive confirmation about the dates of the meetings, our steering board will travel to New York to submit the petition. The main request is for the United Nations to prepare an official report on what happened with the raping of women during the war in Kosovo,” Tahiri said. She also said that Kosovar society needs to do more awareness-raising about women raped during the war. “There have been some activities, but much more needs to be done. The petition seeking international justice for women raped during the war is a contribution toward awareness-raising both locally and internationally. Now we need even greater engagement. There is also a law that includes this category of women, but I think we should be doing much more,” Tahiri said.
