In the recent quarterly report on Kosovo, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, expressed concern over the migration of people from Kosovo. At the same time, he welcomed the establishment of the Kosovo Assembly and the government and provided a chronology of events that will be discussed at the Security Council meeting this Friday, 6 February. The meeting will be chaired by one of the Security Council’s permanent members, China, while Kosovo will be represented by Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci.
“Reports about people of Kosovo migrating over the recent months are a cause for concern,” Ban is reported to have written in the report. He said he welcomed efforts of Kosovo authorities to address the issue of migration and was encouraged by the commitment to improve social and economic situation for all people in Kosovo.
In the report which covers the period from 16 October 2014 to 15 January 2015, SG Ban stressed he expects Kosovo authorities to address numerous challenges that Kosovo faces. “Diversity reflected on the composition of the government shows the progress achieved and this is new motivation in efforts to build a multiethnic and democratic Kosovo,” Ban said. Among other important steps, SG Ban mentioned approval of legislation for establishment of the special court and called for continuation of the EU-facilitated dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade as well as implementation of 19 April 2013 agreement, especially underlining the need for establishment of association/community of Serb majority municipalities.
