Belgrade and Pristina could reach an agreement over the Peace Park in North Mitrovica, and one of possible solutions could be that it is transformed into a walking area.

Our side is ready to make a concession and remove the concrete flower pots, however due to security concerns, particularly because of incidents which have been frequent recently, we don’t agree to open it for traffic. Those arguments have been presented in the last round of the dialogue in Brussels and EU officials have shown understanding for Serbia’s stand, Vecernje Novosti reported.

The head of Pristina technical team in negotiations with Belgrade Edita Tahiri said that two sides have approximated their positions with regard to the Peace Park and that an agreement over the issue could be reached in May.

The Mayor of North Mitrovica Goran Rakić said to Novosti that nothing concrete has been agreed yet and that no agreement will be signed until a compromise solution is found to accommodate both sides.

“Mayors of southern and northern parts of Mitrovica are supposed to reach an agreement, that is Agim Bahtiri and me. We will insist on solution that would satisfy residents in all parts of Kosovska Mitrovica, and which would lead toward the stabilization of the situation,”  said Rakić.

Rakić believes that despite opposed stands over the Peace Park, the agreement is necessary and that finding adequate solution is possible. He reminded that the Peace Park has replaced the barricades set by the Serbs from North Mitrovica out of fear for their safety.
