Figliuolo: We will protect the peace in northern Kosovo (Vecernje Novosti)

The situation in Kosovo is calm and stable and is improving every day, thanks to the determination of KFOR and Kosovo security organizations. However, unforeseen situation is possible due to the fragile nature of inter-ethnic relations, said the KFOR commander, Italian General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo.

Can one guarantee the security in the north of Kosovo?

We can provide security in Kosovo north in coordination with the Kosovo police and EULEX. KFOR has about 5,000 troops in Kosovo that can quickly be deployed throughout the territory.

Which is the assessment of the situation at the bridge over the Ibar /Iber River?

The security situation in this part of Mitrovica is currently calm. KFOR and Kosovo police are present on the bridge over the Ibar / Iber River. We are always ready to prevent an escalation and to intervene, if necessary.

Serbs still do not have sufficient freedom of movement, especially in isolated and remote communities in Kosovo? 

This is particular aspect of our mission, which is positively implemented. KFOR will continue to provide freedom of movement for all people in Kosovo.

Returnees in the municipalities of Istok / Istog and Klina / Kline are almost daily targeted by Albanian robbers? 

We know that there were some criminal incidents in those municipalities. KFOR pays great attention to incidents that could lead to inter-ethnic problems and is in constant contact with the local representatives in order to have a better understanding of the problem.

Orthodox monasteries and churches in Kosovo are protected?

Since I took over the duty of the Commander of KFOR, there were no some bigger attacks on Orthodox monasteries and churches. Currently, Kosovo Police with KFOR provide security for the orthodox temples. KFOR is directly responsible for security only in Visoki Decani monastery.

Is it true that Albanians have KFOR support for the transformation of the so-called security forces in the army of Kosovo?

KFOR has not made any statement on the subject. The evolution of the Kosovo security forces is political process.

Albanians, members of Islamic terrorist organizations, recruit an increasing number of young people for the fights in Iraq and Syria… 

The phenomenon of “foreign fighters” affects every European country at different levels. Terrorist organizations often recruit their followers where there is poverty, marginalization, and lack of perspective. But Kosovo institutions are dedicated to the fight against this phenomenon and in recent months have taken concrete actions to prevent terrorism.
