The death of a 39-year old woman from Suhareka, who was stabbed to death by her husband, has sparked criticism of the Kosovo institutions’ handling of the case as the victim had several times in the past reported her husband for domestic violence. The husband was several times arrested but released shortly after, said the victim’s sister. The police are convinced they acted within the law with regards to the domestic violence cases filed by the victim since 2002. There were two indictments against the husband but he only got a suspended six-month sentence for the first one and the second lawsuit did not reach the court at all. The Kosovo Women’s Network has expressed concern about the case and said it is saddened by reports that the victim had informed police of violence occurring within her family previously, but that police reportedly had not taken any actions to address her concerns. KWN requested a swift response by Kosovo institutions and called on the police to immediately fully investigate this crime. Meanwhile, the group of Kosovo women MP has also expressed concern with the increased cases of gender-based violence. They said the case shows that the rule of law should reach all levels and called on relevant institutions to deliver the right sentence.
