The mayors of four municipalities in northern Kosovo on Saturday described the recent announcement of Pristina, on the ban of use of Serbian ID cards at the administrative crossings, as a threat of violence. They say that the Serbs will block the Jarinje and Brnjak crossings if the decision is implemented.

“The Serbs in northern Kosovo and Metohija (KiM) will not allow themselves to be locked up in a ghetto, and they are warning that if it is not going to be possible to cross Jarinje and Brnjak with identity documents issued by the Republic of Serbia, they will block the administrative crossings,” the mayors of North Mitrovica/Mitrovice, Zubin Potok, Leposavic/Leposaviq and Zvecan/Zveqan said in a release.

They called on Pristina not to talk to the Serbs in northern Kosovo using a language of violence, but to try and solve any problems through dialogue.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that the Serbian government was working hard to resolve the issue and that it would be a topic of a meeting in Brussels on Monday or Tuesday.

The Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija also said that the Serbs in Kosovo should not be afraid about the possibility of being denied the right to free movement with Serbian identity cards, adding that the Office expected to resolve the issue at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday.
