All media cover today’s press conference by Kosovo’s Chief State Prosecutor Aleksander Lumezi, highlighting his statement that in the coming weeks the prosecution in cooperation with the police will launch a joint action of freeing up several usurped properties. During a presentation about the work of the State Prosecution for 2015, Lumezi said he was not satisfied with the fight against high-level corruption and added that the prosecution cannot act on generalized information. “If we have evidence on anyone, including high-ranking officials, we will act without hesitation, but you should also know that it is very difficult to secure evidence. This requires reporting by all state institutions. The State Prosecution cannot do this on its own because the rule of law implies coordination between all state institutions,” he added. Lumezi said Kosovo’s prosecutors are ready to take over cases currently handled by prosecutors of the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX). Asked to comment on the extension of EULEX’s mandate, Lumezi said the matter is in the hands of the Kosovo government and President, “but after June, EULEX should not take up new cases”. Under the headline Agreement with UNMIK for international arrest warrants against Serb criminals, Lajmi news portal quotes Lumezi as saying that it will be difficult for Kosovo’s institutions to try Serbian nationals that committed crimes during the war in Kosovo. “I know this is going to be a challenge but we will address the problem and I hope that an increased number of prosecutors will also help the work of the Department of War Crimes … It is unrealistic to expect that Serbia will hand over to us their nationals suspected of committing crimes in Kosovo, because they are defended by the Constitution and the Criminal Code of Serbia. Most of those responsible for the criminal acts are Serbian nationals that do not reside in Kosovo. We will very soon cooperate with UNMIK in issuing international arrest warrants for people whose identities are known to us”.
