The director of the Centre for Euro-Atlantic Studies Jelena Milic said Monday she expected the Belgrade NATO Week conference to send a message of consensus about the recent past to make possible the planning of the future in mutual interest.

Commenting on a statement in which NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg recently expressed regret over the deaths of the victims of the 1999 bombing, Milic said it had been an explicit expression of regret over the deaths of the victims – civilians, RTS employees and other innocent victims – but that he had reiterated the purpose of the NATO air campaign had been justified and aimed at protecting civilians.

Those were civilians, Kosovo Albanians who were killed and persecuted by Serbian forces, and some generals have ended up at the Hague war crimes tribunal for that reason, Milic said.
