The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has assigned the "geographic area" of Kosovo the +383 dialling code pursuant to the Brussels agreement on telecommunications and a formal letter from Serbia.

"This is a historic achievement in the field of telecommunications that strengthens the international entity of Kosovo," the website of the Kosovo government quoted Minister for Dialogue Edita Tahiri as saying.

Serbian mobile operator in October will be licensed in Kosovo, but only with limited operations, said on Saturday President of the Board of Directors of the Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal communications, Kreshnik Gashi.

According to the announcement of Gashi, Kosovo will get, in early October, dialling code +383 while at the same time Serbian mobile operator will obtain permission to operate in Kosovo, but only with limited operations.

PRISTINA, Kosovo — As Europe's newest nation, Kosovo has most of the symbols of other sovereign countries, such as a flag and a national anthem.

What it still doesn't have is its own international calling code, a political — and economic —- insult that infuriates people in this tiny nation of 1.8 million.

Callers who dial someone in Kosovo on a mobile phone must use the country code for either Monaco (377) or Slovenia (386).
