Gudens: Austria should reconsider recognition of Kosovo (Koha online)

The deputy leader of Austira’s Freedom Party, Johan Gudenus, stated that the wave of the emigrants from Kosovo that western Europe is facing is a proof that Kosovo’s independence and its recognition was a mistake. He added that the United States, as supporters of independence, should take over the responsibility. Gudenus stressed that despite the fact that Kosovo is not a war zone any more, thousands of people are at Austria’s borders. He said that the reason why so many people are leaving a state, which is claimed to be functional, should be considered.

Jahjaga: Kosovo does not have people to lose (Koha online)

The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, visited today Vushtrri/Vucitrn, to initiate her campaign of raising awareness of the population on stopping the illegal emigration. Jahjaga discussed the issue with the mayor of this city, Bajram Mulaku, being that this municipality is considered to be the most affected by this occurrence. After the meeting, Jahjaga made a statement for the media and discussed with people who appeared to be enraged with the situation in Kosovo, requesting jobs and perspective in order not to leave Kosovo.

EU confirms 9 February talks (Koha)

European Union has confirmed that high-level dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade will resume on 9 February. A press release issued by the EU states that the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini will facilitate the meeting between Prime Minister of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister of Kosovo Isa Mustafa in Brussels. It also said: "This is the first high level meeting since after the appointment of the new government in Belgrade and the formation of the new government in Pristina.

Government of Kosovo plans to forgive citizens’ utility debts (Koha)

Kosovo government has today decided to set up a commission tasked with reviewing the possibility of forgiving all debts businesses and people of Kosovo have to institutions and public enterprises until 31 December 2008. “2008 is a year of capital changes in Kosovo, it is the year of declaration of independence, the adoption of the Constitution and implementation of Kosovo laws. We therefore consider it necessary to have a fresh beginning, a detachment from the past,” said Finance Minister Avdullah Hoti. He specified that the commission would look into outstanding taxes and utility bills.

Abrashi: Government believes in Serbian List’s constructiveness (Koha)

Prime Minister of Kosovo Isa Mustafa has not yet received from the Serbian List a nominee for the post of Minister for Communities and Returns after dismissing Aleksandar Jablanovic two days ago. Kosovo government spokesperson Arban Abrashi said PM Mustafa is waiting for a proposal from the Serbian List and added that the government believes in the party’s constructiveness.

Haxhiu: Protest for Trepca could take place next week (Koha)

Vetevendosje MP Albulena Haxhiu told KTV that dismissal of Communities and Returns Minister Aleksandar Jablanovic is a victory of the Kosovo people achieved through the Vetevendosje protests. She said the Wednesday protest has been called off but that there will be a new protest demanding the transformation of the Trepca mining complex into a public enterprise.  Haxhiu said the next protest could take place as early as next week but that its exact time is being coordinated with other opposition parties.

Minister Agani meets head of UNMIK (Koha)

Kosovo’s Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning, Ferid Agani, met with head of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) Farid Zarif.  Agani thanked Zarif for the ongoing cooperation and support that UNMIK has given to the processes in Kosovo, and "assured him that his ministry will continue to cooperate with UNMIK, relying on the new reality in Kosovo created after the declaration of Kosovo’s independence." Zarif, congratulated Agani on his new post, and said that UNMIK will continue to cooperate and give its contribution in the fields dealing with this ministry.

Mustafa: The government has a strategy to prevent irregular migration (Koha)

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Isa Mustafa, on Monday stated that the Kosovo government already has a strategy for preventing irregular migration. According to him, there is nowhere better than Kosovo, and all of those who are fleeing Kosovo will have to come back. "We are working in all sectors of the economy, in order to create new jobs, attract foreign investments and to promote small and medium enterprises which will create the conditions for employment,” said Mustafa. According to him, there will be structural reforms in the fields od education and health sector.

Hyseni: Police does not accept ultimatums (Koha)

Kosovo’s Interior Minister, Skender Hyseni, has justified Kosovo Police’s (KP) actions on the protest of 27 January, saying that the police does not accept ultimatums from any group of protesters. Hyseni told the Committee on Internal Affairs and Security that KP would not have retracted after the ultimatum, because according to him, in this case it would have been a "failure of the state." "Protests with ultimatums do not exist in any democratic country in the world,” said Hyseni. He said that at no point he would use the police for political reasons.
