Veseli Gets Chance to Reshape Kosovo Ruling Party (Balkan Insight)

A long-term senior member and, until recently, deputy president of the party, the chairman of the Kosovo Assembly and former chief of the shadowy intelligence agency, the National Information Service, SHIK, is hardly a new player on the political scene.

While claims that he will reform the party have mostly been met with skepticism, it is now up to Veseli to decide whether his leadership will represent continuity, or be marked by changes.

Kosovo’s Deputy Minister for Culture, Youth and Sports, Rexhep Hoti, said today that talks between Pristina and Belgrade should not continue without the approval of the opposition majority in Kosovo. In a Facebook post, Hoti advised Kadri Veseli, the recently-elected president of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) to involve personalities from the civil society and the media in the process of talks with Belgrade.

Veseli said in the 2005-2006 period, Kosovo was a leader in combating extremism in the region. He said he could not reveal if the former Intelligence Service of Kosovo (SHIK) met with people who were trying to promote radical Islam and if it asked them to leave Kosovo, “because the work of intelligence services is secret”.
