KJC: North integrates into Kosovo’s justice system (Koha/RTK)

Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) hailed the swearing in of judges and prosecutors from the non-majority communities saying it is a sign of the north’s integration into the Kosovo judicial system. In a statement, KJC said the move is an important step and “marks consolidation of a unified justice system throughout the territory of the country” aimed at guaranteeing the people equal access to judicial institutions and achievement of their constitutional and legal rights.

Anyone who is not happy with court decisions can challenge them in an institutional and legal manner and not by perverting the course of justice, KJC noted further.

Kosovo Judicial Council asked to resubmit nominations for judges (RFE)

President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, will not decree 34 judges from the Serb community nominated by the Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) since 2015. Thaçi’s office said the KJC nominations have not been processed due to the expiration of the legal deadline. It also stated that they have asked the KJC to resubmit the nominations including for another 14 candidates for judges from the non-Albanian communities.

Salih Mekaj suspended from his position as President of Appellate Court (Koha)

The Disciplinary Committee within the Kosovo Judicial Council has decided to suspend Salih Mekaj from his positions as President of the Court of Appeals and member of the Board of the Kosovo Judicial Council. This decision came since Mekaj was arrested last week and is being detained on criminal offence charges.

Students from the north, interested to work in Kosovo courts (KosovaPress)

KosovaPress writes that a group of Serbian students from the Law Faculty in north Mitrovica visited the Basic Court in Mitrovica, and among other things, they expressed their interest for recruitment in Kosovo courts. They were interested to know whether they have the right to apply for a job in Kosovo courts, having university degrees in north Mitrovica. The president of the Mitrovica Basic Court, Kada Bunjaku, told them that the central Kosovo institutions are competent for the verification of diplomas.
