Prominent Kosovo Serb politician Oliver Ivanovic killed in drive-by shooting (The Telegraph)

Leading Kosovo Serb politician Oliver Ivanovic was killed on Tuesday in a drive-by shooting as he arrived at his party headquarters, his lawyer and a party official said.

"I am informed that he was shot dead on the spot and efforts to revive him at Mitrovica hospital were unsuccessful," lawyer Nebojsa Vlajic told AFP.

Ivanovic, 64, was considered a moderate politician in the ethnically divided flashpoint town of Mitrovica.

Serbian delegation in Brussles, would interrupt talks with Pristina, and return urgently to Belgrade over the murder of Oliver Ivanovic in Mitrovica North, Blic daily reported.

According to Blic, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called urgent session of the National Security Council at 12.00, while his address to media is expected at 13.00 hrs.

Serbian Government Office for Kosovo and Metohija Director, Marko Djuric confirmed to RTS Belgrade delegation has left the dialogue in Brussels and is heading back to Serbia over the murder of Oliver Ivanovic.

Unknown assailants shot Oliver Ivanovic this morning in North Mitrovica, and he soon succumbed to injuries, it was confirmed to Belgrade daily Blic.

Ivanovic was killed in a shooting occurred around 8.15 this morning in Mitrovica North.

Ivanovic's lawyer, Nebojsa Vlajic, told Blic that Ivanovic, unfortunately, succumbed to injuries.

- It seems that he passed away on the spot. As far as we know, he has five bullet wounds. He was immediately taken to the hospital, doctors tried reanimation, but there was no salvation - Vlajic told Blic.

“Srpska Lista was not our opponent, our opponent was the entire Government of Serbia with all its resources. When you take that into consideration, our result is not that bad,” leader of the Civic Initiative Freedom, Democracy, Justice (GI SDP) Oliver Ivanovic said to KIM Radio.

According to the preliminary results Ivanovic won 1.462 votes in Mitrovica North, more respectively 18.98 percent.

The New Party (established in 2013 and headed by a former Serbian PM Zoran Zivkovic) called upon Serbs in Kosovo to support the candidacy of the leader of CI SDP, Oliver Ivanovic in the forthcoming Kosovo local elections, Blic daily reported.

The party said Oliver Ivanovic “fights for the interests of all Serbs in Kosovo, and not for the interests of the few people from Belgrade and their Kosovo branches,” Blic reported.
